Will a weighted blanket help me to sleep better?💤
Weighted blankets were created to help those who struggle with stress and anxiety.
These blankets apply just the right amount of pressure to your body, so that you can feel safe and grounded… making it easier to drift off to sleep.
A brief backstory on the weighted blanket…
Keith Zivalich was was driving his car, when his daughter draped a long Beanie Baby over his shoulder.
The stuffed animal hugged his shoulder and made him feel some type of comfort, and he thought…
“What if you had a blanket that hugged you this way?”
Soon enough, Mrs. Zivalich created a prototype, some were made in LA, and sent them to a bunch of friends to try out.🎁
One friend of Kieth Zivalich, was a special needs teacher who immediately realized that a blanket can be a huge therapeutic tool.🔧
The actual magic behind the weighted blanket…🔮
The extra pressure on the body, when using a weighted blanket, has helped many kids with autism and sensory processing disorder.
You know how babies are swaddled when they are first born, to give them comfort and relief?🍼👶
Well, it’s the same exact concept, but for older kids and adults (we are all just big babies, let’s admit it..and that’s ok!).
This is why it works though…
The added weight of the blanket, relaxes your nervous system, and causes the brain to release neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine…
This release of chemicals in the body, induces an overall feeling of tranquility and upliftment in your mood.🧘♂️
Serotonin naturally converts to melatonin, and then that’s when you’re extremely ready to fall asleep.🥱
This therapeutic process is called Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation Therapy.
It’s like when you go to the acupuncturist or massage therapist, and they are pressing down or putting pins in specific places all over your body.💆♀️
These centers in your body release happy and calming chemicals, when they are “activated” by pressing down on them.
What’s inside of a Weighted Blanket?🔎
There are basically three different components that make up a weighted blanket.
The blanket, the filling, and the cover.
It is recommended that you purchase a weighted blanket with a removable cover, for easy washing.
Weighted blanket covers, are usually made of, cotton, fleece, rayon, minky, flannel, microfibre, or linen.
And the filler, could be plastic poly pellets, glass micro beads, steel shot beads, or sand.🏜️
Some weighted blankets can even be filled with rice, beans, pebbles, or river stones!⛰️
